She studied interior design in Florence, worked for several years for Italian high-end brands and is now a professional interior designer. Interior designer Kateřina Kersey talked to us about her approach to work, choice of materials and the right color scheme - an inspiring woman who has imprinted her energetic personality on an apartment in nearby Poděbrady. How did she design a space for her dreams and what combination of bedding does she sleep in?

Why did you decide on an apartment in Poděbrady?

After returning from Florence, where I studied interior design, I started working in a Prague studio and looked for my own home. There were more options and opportunities abroad, but in the end I was won over by Poděbrady, a spa town near the metropolis and yet with a calmer, even revitalizing spirit.

Perfect interplay of shades and colors.

What was your intention when you approached the space?

I wanted to create a certain "well-being" atmosphere for life, but also for my creative work. The design was inspired by the teachings of Feng Shui, which I did not take dogmatically, but with a feeling for my needs and dispositions. Every corner of the apartment has its purpose.

What did you base your choice of materials on?

In general, I like earthy tones, that is always the basis, regardless of trends. A home should be about harmony, a place where we find refuge. I see it as a whole, which should serve to relax, to gather more inspiration and strength for the next steps, days.

Do you have any rules for choosing shades that we can recommend to readers?

The choice of cold and warm shades depends on the personality and type of person. Women generally tend to prefer warmer tones, men to darker and cooler ones. And what complements it reflects personality or character. Sometimes we can just stick to natural tones in an earthy range, on the other hand, I like to add a subtle accent and a slight provocation, I try to incorporate a tone or color, a work of art that resonates with the person.

Never Too Late & Old Memories collection.

Why did you choose Lejaan bedding?

That's a funny story... I usually recommend products to clients, with Lejaan it was the other way around. My client called me about choosing bedding for her sister-in-law and sent me a link. I really liked Lejaan's presentation, the simplicity, the purity, what resonates with my motto "less is more". I was also attracted by the processing of materials, timelessness and warmth at the same time, and the prices seemed acceptable considering the quality. In addition, I support all Czech companies. So first I recommended Lejaan to the client, and then I chose for myself.

In the bedroom we can see Mix & Match in practice, you covered three different collections of bedding. Why did you choose these shades?

In every interior I try to have certain connecting elements work there, throughout the apartment. It can be something that is repeated on the structures, tiles, textiles... And that was the case in this case. By using lightly bleached oak with gray elements of the carpet and curtains, I was looking for something that would go tone-on-tone. At the same time, I wanted to incorporate the season or the color that I have everywhere in the apartment. I have two blending shades here, turquoise and old pink, so there wasn't much to think about. Old pink Never Too Late is enlivened by a light stripe Old Memories and it all works well together. And white is a timeless classic that goes with everything.

Starořúžová accompanies you throughout the apartment.

You have our favorite cascade of pillows on the bed...

I admit that for me, it had more of a decorative effect at first. I like it when I make the bed in the morning and it's made all day, and when I go to bed in the evening, I feel like everything is fluffy. So it's more about harmony and relaxation. I prefer to sleep on the biggest pillow (laughs). I like big flat pillows, and sometimes a smaller one under my head, and I use the others for reading, or for breakfast in bed, which we sometimes enjoy.

Depending on the chosen shades, it may seem that the apartment is purely feminine...

It is true that at first glance the apartment may seem fragile, girlish with a touch of contemporary glamour style. However, the truth is that by changing accessories and small furniture, we can easily balance them out into a masculine element.

"Home should be about harmony."

You seem like an energetic person who loves his work and at the same time maybe has to force himself to stop for a moment. Do you have a favorite ritual, routine?

You're right (laughs). I don't really need a routine, but I need to have a certain organization and system. So a few favorite things in everyday life, like warm water with lemon and herbal tea in the morning, I put on music while working, I burn candles in the fall and winter. Lately, I've been trying to incorporate yoga or walks into my work schedule. When I have time, I like to paint, it's a form of meditation for me.

What is important to you when implementing?

With every implementation, I try to ensure that the space accurately reflects the essence of the client and that people find peace and positive energy in it during everyday life.

What style is close to you?

I studied interior design in Florence, which influences my work to this day. I was lucky enough to work in a team of talented designers, where I got the feeling that everything is feasible if you have the motivation. I like to play with different styles and combine them, connecting modern style with industrial, Scandinavian and glamour elements. Luxurious design is close to me, but it does not always mean a direct proportion to questionable quality and high price. Some materials and technical procedures cannot be fooled under any circumstances, however, many things can be made by local carpenters and companies in excellent quality at more affordable prices than certain foreign "brands". It's about what the client specifically expects from the furnishings of the apartment and what options they have.
